Box Score 2 NORTH WALES, PA –
Anthony Boccio (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) hit a grand slam in the opener, and
Joe Kaleck (Southampton, Pa./Neshaminy) hit a two-run shot in the nightcap that put that game out of reach, as visiting West Chester swept a non-league doubleheader from Chestnut Hill on a sunny, but windy and brisk Friday afternoon at Hostelley Field.
West Chester (16-5-1) ran its winning streak to six straight. However, another streak came to a close in Game 2 Friday. For the first time as a Golden Ram, Boccio did not get a hit in a game, ending his consecutive hitting streak at 21 games. It is believed to be the fourth longest in school history since such records were kept. But it falls six games shy of the school mark of 27 set by Andy Bortz.
Despite the streak coming to a close, Boccio played a big role in the opener when his grand slam in the fifth broke things open. West Chester held on for the 8-5 victory. In the nightcap, Kaleck's two-run blast in the top of the sixth pushed a one-run lead to three, and the Golden Rams prevailed, 7-4, over Chestnut Hill (7-19).
John DeMucci (Swarthmore, Pa./Msgr. Bonner & Prendie) hit a two-run homer in the top of the first inning of Game 1 to get the Golden Rams started early. After Chestnut Hill responded with a two-spot in the bottom half,
Avery Spencer (Pottsgrove, Pa./Pottsgrove) put the visitors back on top 3-2 with a RBI single in the third.
West Chester loaded the bases in the top of the fifth, before DeMucci walked to force in a run. Boccio followed with a grand slam that broke the game open, 8-2. Chestnut Hill chipped away from there plating two in the fifth and one in the sixth to make it an 8-5 ballgame. But, that was as close as the Griffins would get.
Kyle Lazer (Havertown, Pa./Msgr. Bonner & Prendie) came on in the seventh and closed out the game for his third save of the season.
Joe Sperone (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) improved to 4-1 on the season with the win on the mound. He threw the first 4 1/3 innings allowing four runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out four.
Gannon Kadlecik (McKees Rock, Pa./Montour) tossed 1 1/3 for the hold allowing one run on two hits, before Lazer retired the side in order in the seventh.
Game two saw West Chester fall behind 3-0. However, a three-spot in the third and two more in the fourth completed the comeback, and the Golden Rams would not trail again.
Evan Profy (Croydon, Pa./Harry S. Truman) doubled in a run to start the third-inning rally.
Zack Miles (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) scored on a wild pitch, and then Kaleck hit a ground ball that scored Profy.
Miles' two-run double in the fourth broke the 3-all tie. Chestnut Hill homered in the fifth to draw within one. Kaleck then smashed his homer to left-center in the sixth to close out the scoring.
David Ferguson (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) threw 3 2/3 innings in relief to pick up his first win of the season.
Drew Simpson (Hockessin, Del./Delaware Military) pitched the seventh for his first career save. He played third base for the first six frames and went 2-for-3 at the plate.
West Chester returns home Saturday afternoon for another non-league double dip against D'Youville University.
