WEST CHESTER, PA – R-So., left-handed pitcher,
Julian Costa (Mantua, N.J./Clearview) came one out away from a seven-inning no-hitter, and West Chester pitchers combined for 14 shutout frames, as the host Golden Rams swept a non-league doubleheader from visiting D'Youville College Saturday afternoon at Serpico Stadium.
West Chester (18-5-1) ran its unbeaten streak to nine games and won all three games with D'Youville (11-14) this season.
D'Youville's Jeremy Glinski laced a double into the left-center field gap with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, spoiling Costa's bid for just the second known no-hitter in school history. Nicholas Frank is the only WCU pitcher to throw a no-hitter, accomplishing that against La Salle back in 1947. Costa (3-2) walked two and struck out eight to earn his third win of the season. West Chester plated one run in the second and three in the sixth to pick up the 4-0 win in game one.
D'Youville starter, lefty Chris Auclair (1-4), was just as impressive as Costa until his exit in the sixth. He allowed four runs, only one of which was earned, on eight hits. He walked one and struck out four.
The Golden Rams limited the Saints to just five hits in game two as the hosts grabbed an 8-0 victory.
Nick Noga (Avondale, Pa./Avon Grove) threw five strong innings in the nightcap, scattering three hits and striking out one. West Chester scored one in the first, four in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Evan Profy (Croydon, Pa./Harry S. Truman) and
Darius Troche (Shillington, Pa./Gov. Mifflin) were each 2-for-3 with a RBI in game one.
Joe Kaleck (Southampton, Pa./Neshaminy),
John DeMucci (Swarthmore, Pa./Msgr. Bonner & Prendie) and
Anthony Boccio (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) each collected a pair of hits in the second game.
Drew Simpson (Hockessin, Del./Delaware Military),
Zack Miles (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) and Boccio each knocked in a pair of runs.
West Chester jumps back into conference play next weekend with a doubleheader at home on Friday against Mansfield. The two schools will conclude their four-game season series in Mansfield on Saturday.
