Women's Volleyball Drops PSAC East Opener at Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa.- Riding a season-long three-match winning streak, the West Chester University women's volleyball team (5-6, 0-1) opened PSAC East play on the road on Wednesday night at local rival Millersville (8-5, 1-0). West Chester captured the second set by a 25-23 final and battled throughout the night but fell to Millersville by a 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 25-11) final.

West Chester led throughout the first set and held a seemingly comfortable 23-19 lead late in the set after a Nicole Dimiris (Hockessin, Del./Saint Marks), but Millersville had the last word, closing out the set on a 6-0 run to escape with a 25-23 first set victory.

In the second set, West Chester once again led early before Millersville stormed back to take a 19-18 lead late in the set after a Emma Kerwin block. West Chester took its turn to close out the set on a 7-2 run, thanks in part to three kills by CeCe Isenberg (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) and another kill by Dimiris to close out the 25-21 second-set victory and even the match at 1-1.

Millersville got out to an early lead in the third set, taking an early 5-1 lead before West Chester chipped away at the lead with a 3-1 run of its own, thanks in part to a pair of Anna Richardson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) to make the score 6-4 early in the third set. West Chester continued its comeback bid as the set continued, eventually claiming its first lead at 16-15 in the late stages, prompting a Millersville timeout. The two sides continued to trade points down the stretch of the fourth set before the Marauders escaped with a 25-23 victory to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Leading 2-1, the Marauders jumped out to a 7-2 lead early in the fourth set and used this early advantage to carry a commanding 18-7 lead into the late stages of the fourth set en route to a 25-11 fourth set victory and a 3-1 win in the match.

Isenberg and Richardson tied for the team lead in kills with 13 each, while PSAC East Athlete of the Week, Lacie Brown (Cochranville, Pa./Avon Grove) logged 45 assists and a team-best 15 digs. Sydney Heffner (Bath, Pa./Northampton) picked up 10 digs of her own in the setback, while Julia Kwitchoff (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) led the team and tied for the match high in aces with two.
