CALIFORNIA, Pa.- Following a disappointing 3-0 loss at Shippensburg on Wednesday night, the West Chester University men’s soccer team (4-2-1) will need to turn the page quickly to prepare for another road test at California (Pa.) (2-3-1) on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Saturday’s matchup, which has been a PSAC contest in years gone by, will be a non-league affair on Saturday as the PSAC returned to Divisional play in men’s and women’s soccer in time for the 2019 season.

Last Time Out

West Chester took to the road on Wednesday night looking to start PSAC play a perfect 2-0-0 for the fifth year in a row, but Shippensburg had other ideas, jumping out to an early lead just two minutes into the match and riding this to a 3-0 victory over the Golden Rams. West Chester found itself trailing by one just two minutes in and by a pair within the first 25 minutes and, despite out-possessing Shippensburg for much of the night, was unable to crack the Raider's defense, led by a six-save effort by Ryan Krumenacker in the setback.

Flock Talk

Maksym Komperda (Whitehall, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) leads West Chester and the PSAC East in goals this year with four, while Peter Tichy (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) is second on the team and tied second in the East in goals with three. Jason Goldfeder (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) also ranks in a tie for first in the PSAC East in assists, recording three already this season, including a pair in a win over Wilmington earlier this season. In goal, West Chester has employed a two-goalkeeper system with Alexi Amanatidis (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./The Shipley School) and Jaden Howard (Townsend, Del./Middletown) splitting time between the pipes. Amanatidis suffered the loss on Wednesday night and is 2-1-1 on the year with a 2.00 goals-against average after allowing eight goals in four matches, while Howard is 2-1-0 with a 1.33 goals-against average and both of the shutouts for West Chester this season.

We Are Honored

Tichy earned his first career PSAC East Athlete of the Week honor earlier this week after scoring two goals to help lead West Chester to a 4-2 victory over Bloomsburg in its PSAC East opener on Saturday afternoon in West Chester.

Bouncing Back

Last season, West Chester went 5-1-2 in games following a loss or tie, including a 2-1 victory over Gannon in the PSAC Semifinals, which halted a two-game winless streak as the Golden Rams ended the regular season with a 2-1 loss to ESU and opened the PSAC Tournament with a scoreless draw (advanced on PKs) vs Bloomsburg.

No Place Like Home

Today is the Golden Rams last road game until an October 19th return trip to Bloomsburg to begin its second turn through PSAC East play. West Chester will play four home games to begin October but will have only one home game after October 12, with that matchup being against Shippensburg on October 23 at 2:30 p.m.

Series History

West Chester holds an 18-11-1 in the all-time series vs Cal and has won each of the last seven meetings between the two sides, including a dominant 4-0 win on Rockwell field the last time the two teams met in 2018. Since 2016, West Chester has outscored Cal 11-2, including a 4-0 victory in 2018, a 5-1 road win in 2017, and a 2-1 road win in 2016. West Chester is on an eight-game unbeaten streak vs the Vulcans, as the 2011 meeting ended in a scoreless draw. West Chester has not lost to Cal since October 2010, which came as part of a three-game losing streak for the Golden Rams vs the Vulcans.

Scouting Cal

Cal enters play with a mark of 2-3-1 on the year and a record of 0-1 in league play after dropping a heartbreaker to Malone on Wednesday night by virtue of a PK. The Vulcans have lost three of four, including setbacks against Lock Haven and West Liberty, with a narrow 2-1 win over Virginia State on Saturday afternoon being the team’s first win since a 1-0 win over D’Youville on September 10. The Vulcans seem to be a different team on friendly soil as they are 2-0-1 at home, allowing just two goals in three matches at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility this season.

Four different Vulcans have scored so far this season, led by Corey McKoy, Brady Olsen, Dereck Reyes, and Mauricio Montenegro Flores, all with one goal to their names on the year. In goal, Kiernan Webb has played most of the time between the pipes, playing to a record of 2-2-1 on the year with a 0.88 goals-against average. AJ Visco has also appeared in two matches with one start, going 0-1 with a 1.38 goals-against average in such appearances.
