Women’s Volleyball Holds Off Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa.- Zoe Haines (York, Pa./York Suburban) led West Chester with 19 kills while Abiah Lane (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) chipped in 16 of her own to help lead the West Chester University women's volleyball team (11-2, 2-0) a 3-2 victory over Kutztown on Friday night.

Lacie Brown (Cochranville, Pa./Avon Grove) turned in a match-best 52 assists along with three aces. Lane also led West Chester in digs with 15 while Anna Richardson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) added 14.

In the first set, West Chester got out to an early 17-10 lead after a 5-0 run, which saw the Golden Rams seize early control. West Chester used this run to capture the first set by a 25-20 final.

In the second set, West Chester held a 17-14 lead late in the set but Kutztown closed the set on an 11-5 run to capture the set by a 25-22 final, tying the match at 1-1.

The Golden Rams led early in the third set but needed a late 3-0 run capped off by a Lacie Brown (Cochranville, Pa./Avon Grove) kill to capture the set 28-26 and restore a 2-1 lead in the match.

West Chester led early in the fourth set and took a 16-12 midway through the set after kills by Zoe Haines (York, Pa./York Suburban) and Maeve Gallagher (Pottstown, Pa./Pope John Paul II). A Julia Kwitchoff (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield) ace got West Chester to match point and prompted a late Golden Bear timeout. Kutztown answered the timeout with a pair of points to take a 25-24 lead before winning the set 26-24 to force a decisive fifth set.

In the fifth set, West Chester held off the upset-minded Golden Bears for a 15-13 victory to win the match by a 3-2 final.
