Last Time Out
West Chester was back in action last weekend at William & Mary, falling to the host Tribe by a 193.325-189.950 final in its first GEC competition since January 25 in Connecticut against Cornell and Bridgeport. EmmaGrace Kelly (Bradenton, Fl.) won the beam with a career-high matching 9.8 and Cat Keener (Holly Springs, N.C.) tied her career high on floor with a 9.750 to finish in a tie for second. Melina Ringas (Glen Allen, Va.) led West Chester on bars with a third-place finish and a score of 9.625, while Bridget Sullivan (Watertown, Ma.) took sixth with a career-best 9.625.
We Are Honored
West Chester earned Gymnastics East Conference weekly awards in two of the last three weeks. McFarland was the first Golden Ram honored with Specialist of the Week honors at the end of January before Cascadden and Kellycaptured Specialist and Newcomer of the Week honors in February after the Golden Rams home opener vs SUNY-Brockport and SUNY-Cortland on February 1.
Road Warriors
Sunday will be the second to last road meet of the regular season for West Chester as the team will visit Towson on March 9 to take on Towson, Rutgers, and Alaska-Anchorage. Sunday’s meet is the eighth meet of the year and the sixth time West Chester has competed away from home with the lone two exceptions being back-to-back home meets on February 1 and 8 vs SUNY Brockport & Cortland and Ursinus, respectively.
Making a Name Among the Giants
West Chester University, which competes at the NCAA Division II level in all other school sports, has held its own against the mostly Division I institutions that make up the Gymnastics East Conference. The Golden Rams are a combined 18-5 in head-to-head competition against GEC schools in the regular season, and West Chester has taken third place in two of the first three GEC Championships (2022, 2023).
Hello Again
All three teams that West Chester competes with this weekend will be repeat foes for the Golden Rams. West Chester visited Bridgeport in Late January, hosted Ursinus on February 8 and competed against William & Mary just last weekend in Virginia.
Scouting the Opposition
Ursinus
Ursinus enters the weekend on the heels of a fourth-place finish at a quad meet last Sunday at George Washington alongside UW-Lacrosse and Cornell. The Bears scored a 190.625 on Sunday led by a 47.900 on floor led by a 9.725 from Arianna Ellis, which matched her career high. Madison Zimmerman led Ursinus on beam with a 9.750 to take eighth, while Erin Roe took seventh on vault with a team-best 9.700. Ursinus posted its best performance of the year on bars with a 47.150, led by Roe, who recorded a 9.625. Competing in the all-around, Roe finished with a 38.325, which was good enough for third overall.
Bridgeport
Bridgeport heads into the weekend after first-place finishes in each of its last three meets, including a quad-meet sweep of Rhode Island College, Springfield and Wilberforce on 2/9 and a tri-meet sweep of LIU and SCSU on Monday night on Long Island with a 192.550 team score. On Monday night, Bridgeport registered its best score of the night on vault with a 48.375, led by a 9.8 by Abby Kenney for the first of three events victories on the night. Samantha Nokes led the way on bars with another event victory and a season-best 9.775, while Kenney also posted a victory on floor with a 9.725. The lone event Bridgeport did not win was the beam, but the Purple Knights still enjoyed a strong performance by Maggie Coyle, who finished with a 9.725.
William & Mary
Against West Chester on Sunday, William & Mary honored its senior class with a season-high score of 193.325 led by Hannah Burke winning both vault (9.750) and floor (9.775). Burke’s score on vault was a season-high and matched her career-high while her floor mark was also a season high. Sarah Wozniak claimed the bars title with a 9.750. Melanie Faulkner and Caroline Blatchford tied for second on beam with a 9.775, which served as a career-high for Faulkner.
