WEST CHESTER, Pa.- The West Chester University men's track and field team opened its season at home this weekend in the Purple and Gold Invitational on South Campus. Competing against a strong regional field, West Chester started its season with a victory, racking up 129 points, including multiple field event victories in an impressive opening weekend performance.
Amarre Mayo (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North), Nick Tran (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley), and Damian Simpson (Easton, Pa./Wilson) all recorded top-four finishes in the 100 in 11.16 and 11.18 seconds, respectively to finish in third and a tie for fourth.
Mayo also led West Chester in the 200, finishing second in 22.68 seconds.
Nick Forman (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) led the team in the 1500 with a ninth-place finish 4:18.00.
Daniel Schikel (Prospect Park, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) finished third in the 110 hurdles in 15.76 seconds, while
Brayden Teufel was sixth in the 400 hurdles in 1:03.13.
West Chester won the 4x100 relay in 41.57 seconds, while also taking eighth in the 4x400 relay in 3:42.00.
Sammy Jenkins (Malvern, Pa./Conestoga) won the pole vault with a mark of 13 feet 3 ½ inches (4.05m).
Will Rivers (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) took second in the long jump with a mark of 12-10 (6.65m). Rivers also won the triple jump with a mark of 47-11 ¼ (14.61m) , while
Chase Parkinson (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) was second with a mark of 44-3 ¼ (13.49m).
Derrick Lukomski-Pizzo (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) won both the shot put and discus with marks of 49-8 ½ (15.15m) and 167-5 (51.03m), respectively. Lukomski-Pizzo's effort in the discus also goes as an early provisional qualifying mark.
Ben Thornton (Lincoln University, Pa./Salesianum) took sixth in the hammer with a mark of 111-5 (33.95m), while
Collin Niedrowski was second in the javelin with a mark of 158-4 (48.26m).
West Chester will be back in action next weekend at the Danny Curran Invitational hosted by Widener.
