Looking to run its winning streak to three in a row, the West Chester University field hockey team returned to action on Saturday evening against Newberry, falling to the Wolves by a 3-0 final.
Caitlynn Szarko powered the offense with a team high of six shots on goal, while
Nina Scott and
Alexa Lehman each added two of their own. The strong team of forwards led the attack but came up short, unable to convert these chances into a goal. Goalkeeper
Audra Szymborski was tested throughout the match, recording six saves. Szymborski has remained steady and a reliable presence in the cage.
FLOCK TALK
Veerle Hersman leads the team in scoring with five goals and one assist on the year for 11 points, while Scott is second with three goals and three assists the year for 11 points. In goal, Syzmborski is in the midst of a great first season with the Golden Rams, playing to a record of 4-2 with a 1.76 goals-against average.
SERIES HISTORY
The fourth-ranked Golden Rams hold a dominant 17-0 record against Mansfield since 2011, including two shutout victories last season. They are a perfect 9-0 at home record against Mansfield and hope to extend this record in the first encounter against Mansfield this season.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
The sixth-ranked Mansfield Mountaineers (3-3) head to Vonnie Gros Field looking to bounce back after a narrow 2-1 loss to Shippensburg.
Leading the charge on offense is sophomore Jenna Duke, who has tallied six goals so far this season. In their most recent outing, senior Ella du Plessis sparked the attack, recording a team-high three shots on goal. She currently has two goals and two assists this season.
In the back, their defense is led by goalkeeper Lydia Miller, a redshirt sophomore from Millerstown, Pa. She recorded four saves for Mansfield in their last game against No. 2 Shippensburg.
HOME SWEET HOME
West Chester is in the midst of a seven-game homestand, which will see the team play its first two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) games of the year against East Stroudsburg and Millersville on September 27 and October 1, respectively.
