West Chester University continues its homestand this Saturday with a non-conference meet against SUNY Cortland at 1 p.m. inside the Sturzebecker Health Science Center. It is the second straight weekend the Golden Rams have been home thanks to a shuffling of meets last Saturday due to the snow storm that blanketed the East Coast. Today's meet was supposed to serve as West Chester's home opener. However, last Saturday took that honor when the Golden Rams had to cancel its trip to Upstate New York and instead hosted William & Mary.
West Chester evened the all-time series against William & Mary at nine wins apiece while remaining perfect against the Tribe at home in its four encounters inside Sturzebecker. Freshman
Gianna Smith was named the Gymnastics East Conference (GEC) newcomer of the week after her outstanding performance in the all-around.
West Chester posted a score at, or above, 48 in three of the four events and walked away with a season-high overall score of 192.225. The Golden Rams put up season-bests on the bars and the beam while equaling their best on the vault in Saturday's meet. All three weeks has witnessed West Chester improving upon its scores as the purple & gold work their way towards the WCGNIC Championships at the end of the season.
Gianna Smith seems to have settled into the role of an all-arounder for head coach
Barbara Cordova. We will see if Cordova continues to use her star freshman in that role as the year progresses. Classmate, Maddie McCullough, has worked her way into the lineup on the bars while another freshman,
Katelynne Tatum has found a spot on the vault. Fellow freshman
Aly Sobczak has worked in nicely on the vault and floor exercise as the Golden Rams' youth movement rolls on. Senior
Anna Lacey won the balance beam last week for her first event win.
