West Chester Gymnasts Top SUNY Cortland With Season-High Score

WCU v SUNY Cortland Meet Results

WEST CHESTER, PA – West Chester won all four events en route to a new season high score as the host Golden Rams topped visiting SUNY Cortland, 192.65-189.225 in a non-conference women's gymnastics meet inside Sturzebecker Health Science Center Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Gianna Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led the way for the Golden Rams while competing in the all-around. She equaled, or tied, three career-highs, including an impressive 9.825 on the uneven bars that led to a new all-around career high of 38.65 in the meet. Along the way, Smith won both the uneven bars and the floor exercise. The only other score north of 9.8 in the meet was Tatum McGuinn (Glen Mills, Pa.), who set a new career high on the balance beam with a 9.825 which was good for first place in that event.

West Chester started off on the vault tying their season-best with a 48.000 team score for the third consecutive meet. Sarah Eskew (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored a 9.700 in the anchor position to take first place on the vault. Smith tied her career high with a 9.625 which equaled teammate Ava Griffith's (Palm Desert, Calif.) score on the vault and tied the two Golden Rams for third place overall.

Freshman Madelyn McCullough (Covington Twp., Pa.) hit a 9.675 on the uneven bars to place second and establish a career high. She scored a 9.675 the first week of the season at Towson, but that was in exhibition. She did it as a member of the Golden Rams' lineup for the first time on Saturday. Grace McNamara (Baltimore, Md.) scored a 9.65 to finish third overall, and teammates Melina Ringas (Glen Allen, Va.) and Eskew each had a 9.600. West Chester set a new season high on the bars with a 48.350.

In addition to McGuinn's outstanding effort on the beam, EmmaGrace Kelly (Tampa, Fla.) scored a 9.700 finishing third overall, which was good for a season high, but shy of her career mark. Smith scored a 9.45. Corinne Gruber (Boyertown, Pa.) hit a new season high on the floor exercise and placed second to Smith, but was just short of her career standard. Meanwhile, Aly Sobczak (Pottsgrove, N.J.) tied her career high on the floor with a 9.65 while Catherine Keener (Holly Springs, N.C.) set a new career best with a 9.675 on the floor that tied her for fourth.

West Chester returns to action next weekend when they travel to the University of Bridgeport for a Gymnastics East Conference (GEC) showdown with the Purple Knights on Saturday at 1 p.m.
