BOYDS, Md.- The West Chester University women's rugby team opened its stay at the Collegiate Rugby 7s Championships at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Maryland, on Saturday morning. West Chester started its weekend with a 12-7 OT victory over Wheeling before falling to three-time defending Champion Brown in the National Quarterfinals by a 36-0 final.
West Chester found itself in a physical match throughout the morning against Wheeling and got an overtime try from
Bridget Kowalski (Chester Springs, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) to open the Tournament with a 12-7 victory over Wheeling.
Camryn Snow (Exton, Pa./West Chester East) helped spark the victory as she earned a penalty around midfield at the start of overtime and gave a clutch assist to Kowalski moments later as she scored a breakaway try for the victory.
Ashlyn Wissler (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) started the scoring with a first-half try, and
Emma Davies (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) was good on the conversion from the corner, which gave West Chester an early 7-0 lead and helped West Chester get to overtime against the Cardinals. West Chester turned in an excellent defensive effort throughout the opening match and thwarted the Cardinal offense consistently throughout the afternoon.
In the Quarterfinals against three-time defending Champion Brown, West Chester fell 36-0 to finish its first day at the Championships.
West Chester will be back in action tomorrow morning on Field 12 in the Plate Semifinals against Queens beginning at 10:40 a.m.
