SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The postseason accolades keep rolling in for freshman right-hander Fred Breidenbach as he was the only West Chester University baseball player named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association (NCBWA) first team All-Atlantic Region squad it was announced Wednesday afternoon. Second baseman Joe Wendle and catcher Bob Stumpo were named to the second team.
Concord University’s Greyson Schram was voted the region’s player of the year while Wheeling Jesuit hurler Noah Mull was voted the region’s pitcher of the year. California (Pa.) skipper Mike Conte was named the region’s coach of the year.
Breidenbach broke the school’s single-season record for wins with an 11-2 record on the mound this spring. He authored a 4.03 ERA in 14 appearances, which included 12 starts. The freshman led West Chester with just over 80 innings pitched and completed two games. He was also named the PSAC East freshman of the year and was a Daktronics, Inc., All-Atlantic Region selection by the region’s sports information directors.
Breidenbach struck out a staff-best 62 batters on the year in leading West Chester (39-14) to the PSAC Eastern Division regular-season championship. The Golden Rams reached the Atlantic Region final for the fifth consecutive year where their season came to an end against rival Kutztown.
Wendle was named to the second team All-Atlantic Region squad by the NCBWA. He finished his sophomore season with a team-best .389 batting average, including 81 hits, 20 doubles, 5 triples and 7 home runs. He knocked in 58 runs, scored 64 runs himself and posted a .635 slugging percentage with a .443 on-base percentage to boot.
Stumpo, another second team all-region pick by the baseball writers, was a mainstay behind the plate for West Chester, catching all 53 games of the season. He hit .305 on the year with 11 doubles and 8 home runs. He knocked in 52 runs and registered a .503 slugging percentage. Additionally, Stumpo made just two errors and threw out 16 of 46 would-be base-stealers on the year.
Honorable mention all-region selections from West Chester also included: Kyle Orensky (1B), Nick Spisak (SS), Matt Baer (OF), Charlie Kelly (OF), Kevin McGrath (OF), Brandon Wolfe (DH) and Jordan Lehman (SP).
Schram collected the regular-season West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference triple crown after posting a .530 batting average, including 18 home runs, and 77 RBI. Mull, a product of Wheeling W. Va., capped off a stellar senior season with a 7-1 record and a WVIAC-best 2.09 earned run average. In addition to this postseason honor, Schram and Mull were also named the WVIAC player and pitcher of the year, respectively.
