SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - West Chester's women's rugby team fell to Shippensburg on the road Saturday by a measure of 31-12. The Golden Rams fall to 3-3 overall on the year while the Raiders remained undefeated at 4-0.
Shippensburg was big, strong and fast and showed why the are the current Division II national champions. The Red Raiders came out and put pressure on the Rams from the start, taking advantage of the wind advantage and pinning WCU back against the goal line for much of the first half.
West Chester battled valiantly for 16 minutes before Shippensburg's Steph Kern caught a kick in the end zone for the first score of the match. The conversion was made by Natalie Monroiy.
Shippensburg then went to the kick for the rest of the day and put the Rams under a lot of pressure. K.L. Shuey broke free and scored just before halftime for a score that made the halftime score 12-0 in favor of the Raiders.
West Chester came out in the second half like a new team and drove right down to the Shippensburg end with some hard nosed runs by freshman Sara Glick. Glick's entry into the match provided a much needed spark by the offense, and she carried four Raiders' defenders over the line for a West Chester try at 43:00 minutes.
Although the try was not converted, West Chester had the momentum and would drive right back down to the Shippensburg goal line.
Unfortunately, the Raiders' Natalie Monroiy broke through WCU's defense to put them back ahead by 12 points, 17-5. Shippensburg then took control of the match scoring two more converted trys before West Chester scored at the end of the match to make it, 31-12, Shippensburg.
West Chester will play Princeton in two weeks for the EPRU Division I Championship in Princeton, NJ.
Game time is slated for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 2.
