MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Dana Weems scored 23 points and pulled down 17 rebounds to lead West Chester to an 88-71 victory over Lock Haven in the Millersville Tip-Off Tournament in women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon at Pucillo Gym.
Weems picked up where she left off last season in the PSAC playoffs with another dominating performance as the Golden Rams opened their 2008-09 campaign with a victory. Weems chipped in 10 defensive rebounds in the contest.
West Chester opened up a double-digit lead in the final three minutes of the first half, going on an 11-5 run that sent the Rams into the half up 43-31.
Out of the break, the Golden Rams buried the Bald Eagles for good with a 15-6 spurt fueled by Janelle Garber’s seven points and one blocked shot. West Chester hit all seven of its foul shots during the decisive run that helped the Rams to its biggest lead of the game at 21 points (58-37).
Garber finished with 19 points for West Chester. Megan Stewart contributed 14 points, three steals and five assists.
West Chester will take on Columbia Union tomorrow afternoon on the second day of the season-opening tournament in Millersville.
