PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Erin Chesnavich scored 22 points and Alyssa Hamm added 20 more as host University of the Sciences downed visiting West Chester, 65-55, in a non-league women’s basketball game Tuesday evening.
West Chester (2-1) suffered from a poor shooting effort from the floor (35.4 percent) all night and never got into any kind of rhythm after running out to a lead in the first three minutes of the game. Meanwhile, USP (2-1) enjoyed a 52.3 percent performance from the field to hang on for the victory.
Dana Weems registered 12 points and Megan Stewart a team-high 15. Bridget Carlin dished out seven assists and Janelle Garber was the third Golden Rams player in double figures with 10.
Marissa Chesnavich chipped in 12 points for USP in the win.
West Chester looked as though it may have its way with the Devils in the opening three minutes of the game. The Rams ran out to a 13-2 lead over that span. However, USP slowly cut away at deficit and finally took its first lead of the game (19-18) on a layup by Hamm with just under 10 minutes to play in the half.
From there, the two teams went back-and-forth with West Chester holding a 32-31 advantage at the break.
It was USP who came out of the locker room on fire. The Devils spun off a 10-4 run that gave them an eight-point cushion early in the final frame. Weems drew West Chester to within three at the 5:17 mark. However, USP used a 3-ball from Hamm to extend its advantage back to six, and a layup from Allison Weiss stifled another Golden Rams attempt at a run.
USP sealed the win by nailing all seven of its free throws down the stretch as West Chester desperately fouled trying to play catch up.
The Golden Rams will open their home slate on Saturday at Hollinger Field House with a 1 p.m. tipoff with Philadelphia University. The men will take on the Rams at 3 p.m. after the women’s game.
