West Chester Men Third After Day One At Cavalier Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.
– West Chester witnessed two national qualifying times individually and is currently third with 168 points after day one of the Cavalier Invitational at the Aquatic Fitness Center on the campus of the University of Virginia.

Virginia, ranked 13th in the country at Division I, leads the pack with 480 points while Yale, a powerhouse in the Ivy League, is in second place with 197 points.

In a meet formatted like the NCAA championship meet, West Chester’s Max Bernardes and Matt Golebiewski each qualified for nationals in the 500 free while the Golden Rams’ 200 free relay (Brendan Fanslau, Rod King, Josh Pauley, Golebiewski) missed qualifying by one second.

Bernardes swam a 4:32.64 in the morning prelims, and Golebiewski hit the standard with a 4:33.92 in the same prelim. Bernardes placed fifth (4:33.72) in the evening finals while Golebiewski was eighth (4:44.36).

Fanslau turned in his top performance in the prelims of the 50 free with a 20.83. He returned that night to place sixth in 21.02.

The ‘B’ squad in the 200 free relay (Kevin Moyer, Joe Watts, Eric Kunzman, Dan Casey) finished sixth in 1:27.05.

Thursday’s events included the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and the 400 medley relay and diving events. The schedule for Friday includes the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 800 free relay. The meet concludes Saturday with the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relay.
