Box Score
WEST CHESTER, Pa. - West Chester scored twice in the final 11 minutes of the game, but could not find the equalizer as Rider barely hung on for a 3-2 victory in a non-league field hockey match Wednesday night.
The Golden Rams (3-3), trailing 3-0 and being outshot 17-1 over the first 46 minutes of the tilt, finally got going when Marisa Holzman scored with 10:25 remaining in the contest. Rider (2-3) sustained a frantic comeback bid by West Chester for its second win on South Campus' Turf Field in the past four days. The Broncs defeated Appalachian State, 3-2, in the Vonnie Gros Classic Sunday afternoon.
Desiree Walker hammered in a shot off a penalty corner 1:34 after Holzman's goal to pull West Chester within striking distance. However, the hosts never got any closer as Rider goalkeeper Lyndsie Johnson stood strong in the cage.
West Chester outshot Rider, 9-0, over the final 24 minutes and were awarded eight penalty corners during that same span. Sophomore Brittany Cislak, who picked up an assist on Walker's tally, almost got the game-tying goal when she inserted a ball off a corner, and Walker ripped a shot that Johnson kicked aside.
Cislak slapped at the rebound, but could not poke it past a sprawled out Johnson, with just 1:25 left in the game.
The Broncs, who held a 17-10 advantage in shots, took their final shot of the day at the 46:09 mark of the contest. Johnson made seven saves for the visitors. Forward Tricia Crotty scored all three of the Broncs' goals.
Joelle Zarefoss stopped 10 shots for West Chester - all in the first half.
