Game Notes
WEST CHESTER, Pa. - For the second week in a row, West Chester University will renew acquaintances with an old friend as the Golden Rams travel to Kutztown University for a PSAC East clash with the Golden Bears Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at University Field in Kutztown. Saturday’s encounter marks the 54th meeting between the two state rivals in a series that dates back to 1937.
West Chester dispatched Millersville, 41-10, last week while Kutztown is still smarting from a 31-21 setback at the hands of Bloomsburg. The Golden Rams witnessed sophomore running back D’Andre Webb break a school record with 306 yards rushing and four touchdowns against the Marauders. With Lee Hopkins lost indefi nitely, Webb will be the featured back in the Rams’ running attack. West Chester is still looking for senior wide receiver Mike Washington to have that breakout game. His 155 yards and two TDs against Lock Haven was impressive. However, head coach Bill Zwaan and his staff know that the Harlon Hill hopeful is capable of much more. Against Kutztown’s weakened secondary
due to graduation, watch for Washington to have a big day.
Kutztown looked very good last Saturday in a nail-biter with East Division leader Bloomsburg. The Bears held the ball in Husky territory in the second half with a chance to tie or take the lead, but let the opportunity and the game slip away. KU will try to halt it’s three-game losing streak this season and a four-game slide against West Chester overall.
The Golden Bears are fi fth in the PSAC in rushing (193.5 ypg) and seventh in passing (200.8 ypg) offensively. The team ranks third in fi rst downs (82), but ninth in scoring (25 ppg) because of turnovers. Kutztown leads the PSAC in turnovers (12) and has scored just 64 percent of the time it has had the ball in the red zone. The Bears will be a dangerous team when they cut down on those mistakes and become more consistent in the red zone.
