West Chester Women Fall Short At Mercyhurst, 77-67

ERIE, Pa. – Dana Weems and Megan Stewart each scored 12 points, but visiting West Chester could not overcome a strong finish by host Mercyhurst, dropping a 77-67 non-league PSAC crossover contest in Erie, Pa., Saturday afternoon in the first meeting between the two schools.

West Chester (7-5) saw its losing streak extend to three games with the loss. Mercyhurst, 6-6, has now won two of its last three to even its record.

Renata Neal (6 points) hit a layup with eight minutes left that put West Chester in front, 57-55, for the last time. Mercyhurst went on a 9-0 run over the next 4 minutes, 34 seconds to take the lead for good at 64-57.

From there, the host Lakers outscored the Golden Rams by a 13-10 margin on the strength of three 3-pointers from Jackie Artise and a 7-for-8 effort at the foul line down the stretch.

Artise’s first trey ignited Mercyhurst’s 9-0 run, giving the hosts the lead for good. Each of her next two three’s extended the Lakers’ lead to eight after West Chester had drawn to within five twice in the final three minutes of the game.

Stephanie Prischak led the Lakers with a game-high 26 points. She also added six assists five rebounds and five steals. Amy Archesinski netted 18 points, going 8-for-10 from the line.

West Chester continues its western swing Sunday with a 1 p.m. tilt at Slippery Rock.
