WEST CHESTER, Pa – Janelle Garber led all scorers with 18 points as the West Chester University women’s basketball team opened their 2009-10 season with a 75-62 victory over the University of Sciences in Philadelphia on Tuesday evening inside Hollinger Field House.
West Chester (1-0) opened their season with an impressive victory. USP (0-1) stumbles out of the gate with a disappointing loss.
In addition to her 18 points, Garber pulled down six rebounds, chipped in two assists, and blocked two shots. Junior guard Megan Stewart also contributed with 11 points on 3-for-7 shooting with seven assists.
USP cut the deficit to one (38-37) in the second half before West Chester went on a 20-6 run over a six-minute span, pushing the lead to 15 (58-43) with 5:30 remaining in the game. Garber and senior Natalie Winters sparked the run with five points apiece.
Caitlin Shaw led USP with 16 points on 7 of 11 shooting. Shaw also had six rebounds in 26 minutes played.
West Chester’s shooters were on point in the opener, shooting an impressive 50 percent from the floor in the game.
West Chester’s next action comes this Friday against Lock Haven University in the Millersville tip-off tournament in Millersville, Pa.
