West Chester Men’s Swimming Qualifies One Relay And One Individual

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – West Chester University’s men’s swimming team witnessed its 800-yard freestyle relay team and Max Bernardes hit national qualifying times on day two at the Cavalier Invitational at the Aquatics and Fitness Center Friday night.

The meet features a championship-style format with prelims for each event beginning at 11 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. On Saturday, prelims begin at 10 a.m. with finals at 5 p.m. Live results will be linked on www.wcupagoldenrams.com as well as Virginia’s official athletic web site.

Bernardes swam the 400 individual medley in 4 minutes, 3.05 seconds to place third overall and automatically qualify for the 2010 NCAA Division II Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships next March.

He also led off the 800 free relay team that finished fourth in 6:45.21 to qualify for nationals as well. Kenny McCormick, Tommy Rhoads and Brendan Fanslau teamed up with Bernardes on that relay to pace the Golden Rams.

Rhoads hit ‘B’ qualifying times in the 200 free, placing sixt in 1:42.16. West Chester had a swimmer hit either an ‘A’ or a ‘B’ time in six of the seven events competed Friday night.

Joining the Golden Rams and host Virginia at the UVA Invitational this weekend will be the Kansas women, and both the men's and women's teams from Washington and Lee and American University.
