Box Score
WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Wilmington scored two runs each in the eighth and ninth innings to come from behind a steal a 7-4 victory over No. 7 West Chester on a sunny but cold afternoon at Serpico Stadium Tuesday.
Playing with wood bats in preparation for its southern trip to the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. next week, West Chester (2-2) rapped out 10 hits and held a 4-3 advantage until the eighth inning.
Wilmington (1-0) registered 12 hits with half of those coming in its final two at bats to come away victorious. Both teams threw nine pitchers, one each frame, in the contest.
Cody Holliday and Brian Woolford (1-0), who picked up the win in relief, poked RBI hits in the eighth to put the Wildcats on top 5-4. Holliday singled home J.T. Gregory, and Woolford followed with a run-scoring double that plated Holliday.
Gregory doubled and would later score in the ninth as Wilmington added to its lead. Matt Umba singled home Gregory for the game’s final run.
West Chester senior Bret Moyer (1-1) suffered the loss. He pitched the eighth, allowing two runs on three hits. Woolford picked up the win for Wilmington. He worked the seventh inning, leaving with a 4-3 deficit. However, the ‘Cats’ bats bailed him out in the eighth to deliver the decision. Holliday worked the ninth for his first save of the year.
Nick Spisak went 3-for-4 with two RBI, including two doubles. Charlie Kelly was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple and a RBI.
West Chester is off until Friday when the Golden Rams take on Dowling in Myrtle Beach, S.C., at 4 p.m.
