West Chester Women Overcome Shippensburg, 69-53

Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa.
– Dana Weems posted another double-double as she scored 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the West Chester Golden Rams beat Shippensburg, 69-53, in a PSAC East women’s basketball contest at Hollinger Field House on Wednesday night.

With the win, West Chester (18-8, 10-3 PSAC East) remains in a tie for first place with Millersville, who was a 74-47 winner over East Stroudsburg. The Golden Rams will go for their first regular-season title since 2003-04 on Saturday when ESU visits Hollinger in the regular-season finale. Shippensburg (11-15, 4-9) dropped both contests to West Chester this year.

Janelle Garber also scored 13 points and snared seven rebounds to go along with two blocked shots. However, it wasn’t until two runs late in the game that the Rams finally put Shippensburg away.

With 10:11 remaining in the second half, and WCU leading, 47-44, West Chester went on a 14-7 run to push their lead to 61-51 with 5:14 remaining. The Rams then saved their best defense for the end of the game. They did not allow a single point over the final 3:35, going on an 8-0 run to seal the deal.

The game was tight throughout the first half, with neither team really building an measureable lead. The biggest advantage of the half came midway through the frame, after a 3-pointer by Mary Kate Serratelli made it 22-16 with 10:01 to go. The score was 26-25 at halftime.

Megan Stewart had an overall solid game for West Chester, scoring 13 points, sharing the ball with five assists and swiping seven steals. Bridget Carlin joined in the fun with five points, two rebounds, and seven assists.

Lauren Beckley led Shippensburg with 22 points, 13 rebounds, and three assists. She scored 18 of her 22 after halftime, keeping the visiting Raiders in the game.

Beckley, 2007-08 PSAC West Division player of the year, was matched up with Weems, last year’s PSAC East Division player of the year, most of the night. Each player registered a double-double.

The Golden Rams host East Stroudsburg Saturday at Hollinger Field House at 1 p.m. A win gives West Chester the division title and top seed in the East for the PSAC postseason tournament.
