No. 1 West Chester Pulls Away From Shippensburg In Second Half, 15-6

Box Score

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.
– Top-ranked West Chester scored eight unanswered goals over the game’s final 12 minutes to pull away from upset-minded Shippensburg for a 15-6 women’s lacrosse victory Tuesday afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.

With the win, West Chester (3-0) upped its winning streak to 23 dating back to last season and has now won 40 straight regular-season PSAC contests.

Sophomore Claire Grimwood sparked the eight-goal rally, scoring three times and assisting on another while Chrissy Stokes scored twice and Shannon Hayes scored one and assisted on two others during the run.

Shippensburg (2-2) remained tied with West Chester, 3-3, at the half and Gayle Kuntzman scored two unassisted tallies in the second half that drew the hosts to within one (7-6) with 15 minutes left in the tilt.

However, the Golden Rams vaunted attack wore down the Raiders’ defenses late in the game to escape with the win.

Grimwood finished with four goals and two assists. Julia Walsh also scored four times and registered one helper. Stokes finished with a hat trick. Mary Beth Green played the whole game in goal and made 11 saves.

Kuntzman, Karen Schnurr and Liz DiNunno each scored twice for Shippensburg. DiNunno’s first tally put the hosts up 2-1 with 10 minutes left in the first half, marking the first time this season that West Chester had trailed in a game.

The Golden Rams will travel to Bloomsburg on March 18 for a 4 p.m. contest with the Huskies.
