No. 1 West Chester Splashes Its Way Past Millersville, 17-5

Box Score

MILLERSVILLE, Pa.
– Top-ranked West Chester University exploded for 10 goals in the second half to walk away from a determined Millersville squad, 17-5, in a very wet and soggy PSAC East women’s lacrosse contest at Chryst Field Thursday afternoon.

Playing in a steady rain and chilling cold, it may have taken 30 minutes for West Chester (6-0, 4-0 PSAC East) to get going. However, the undefeated Golden Rams continued to roll through its eight-game road swing to open the 2009 campaign untested. Millersville (2-3, 1-3) trailed just 7-3 at halftime, but could not keep up with West Chester in the second half.

Courtney Whiting, fresh off her second player of the week nod in the conference, scored four goals to lead the Golden Rams. Nicole Haines, Claire Grimwood and Shannon Hayes each registered a hat trick.

West Chester outshot Millersville, 52-13, in the contest. However, the Marauders’ goalkeeper did her best to keep her teammates in the game for the first half.

The Golden Rams went on a 4-1 in the first four minutes of the second half to open up an 11-4 advantage. Whiting tallied twice at the end of the spurt to crush the spirits of the hosts.

West Chester jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the contest on the strength of two goals by Grimwood. Millersville’s Laura DeLuca broke the string of tallies at the 16-minute mark. However, Grimwood found the back of the net once again one minute later to swing the momentum back in favor of the visitors.

Mary Beth Green (6-0) picked up the win in the cage for the Rams. She played all 60 minutes and was credited with seven saves. Her counterpart, Courtney Haggerty, played 55 minutes and made 11 saves. Madison Allan played the other five minutes and made two saves.

Grimwood, Haines and Hayes all added an assist to their hat tricks to finish with four points. Chrissy Stokes scored twice and assisted on two others to tie her four teammates with four points in the game.

Jackie Baker scored once and assisted on two others while Gina DiDomenicis scored once.

Five different players tallied for the Marauders.

West Chester is back on the road this weekend when it travels west to take on Gannon and Mercyhurst Saturday and Sunday. The Golden Rams will play host to Kutztown at Vonnie Gros Field next Wednesday in the team’s first home tilt of the spring
