WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The second-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels, coached by WCU alumn Karen Shelton, put an end to West Chester University’s season-opening five-game win streak with an impressive 6-0 victory over the Golden Rams in the Vonnie Gros Classic Saturday evening.
West Chester (5-1), off to its best start in over two decades, didn’t have any answers for one of the most powerful teams in the country. North Carolina (6-0) scored three goals in each half to remain perfect at the Vonnie Gros Classic in the four years of its existence.
Joelle Zarefoss made 11 saves in the cage for the Golden Rams, who were outshot 23-2 in the contest. Leah Angstadt and Melissa LeNoir each took one shot for West Chester.
Melanie Brill and Kelsey Kolojejchick each scored twice for the Tar Heels. Katelyn Falgowski and Riley Foster each posted two assists. Danielle Forword and Jacklyn Gaudioso Radvany had the other two Carolina goals.
Jackie Kintzer (6-0) started and played the first half in goal for UNC without registering a save. Brianna O’Donnell played the second half and made one save.
West Chester returns to action on Friday, Sept. 18 when the Golden Rams host Towson at 4 p.m. at Vonnie Gros Field.
