MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Visiting West Chester put three players in double figures, but host Millersville singed the nets in the second half by shooting 59.3 percent as the Marauders took the PSAC East women’s basketball opener for both schools by the measure of 68-57 Wednesday evening inside Pucillo Gym.
West Chester (9-4, 0-1 PSAC East) has now dropped two of its last three contests while Millersville (11-3, 1-0) took the early lead in the conference standings between the two preseason favorites.
The Marauders opened the second half with a 13-6 run in the first five minutes that put the hosts in the lead for good, 38-32, at the 15:12 mark. Some balanced scoring and cold shooting by the Golden Rams enabled Millersville to push out in front further by the midway point as the Marauders outscored the Rams, 25-9, over the first nine minutes of the frame.
Millersville’s lead would eventually increase to 19, before West Chester was able to squeeze it back to 11 by the end of the game.
The Marauders shot 16-for-27 in the final 20 minutes, scoring 43 points after halftime.
Allison Hostetter finished with a team-high 15 points for the Golden Rams. Janelle Garber posted 13 points and Jillian Keefer netted 10 off the bench.
Mashira Newman registered a game-high 18 points off the bench for the Marauders. Raquel Green had 17 points and Ashley Moyer 14 as well.
Millersville outrebounded West Chester by a healthy 42-30 margin.
The two squads virtually went back-and-forth during the first 13 minutes of the contest, which witnessed six ties and four lead changes. The Golden Rams opened up their largest lead of the tilt with 5:10 remaining before the break when Garber finished off a 10-0 run over a 5:27 span.
However, the Marauders answered by scoring the final nine points of the half to trail by only one heading into the locker room.
