WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Allison Hostetter scored all 14 of her points in the second half to lead West Chester University to a 73-63 victory over visiting Philadelphia University in a non-league women’s basketball tilt inside Hollinger Field House Tuesday evening.
West Chester (4-1) went on a 16-9 run over the final 6:21 to pull away from a pesky Philadelphia University (1-1) squad late.
Ambreeline Ortman converted a conventional 3-point play, and Mary Kate Serratelli followed up with a 3-pointer from beyond the arc after Hostetter came up with a steal, to push a three-point cushion to nine with 5:36 to play. That little spurt sparked the Golden Rams’ final run, which secured their fourth win in the first five games of the season.
Though the lead never grew larger than seven points in the first half, West Chester led the entire time until PhilaU’s Taylor Magnus hit a jumper with 22 seconds left to knot things up at 28-all just before the break. A foul shot from Megan Stewart (14 points) with four ticks left gave the hosts a halftime lead.
West Chester got out to a six-point lead (36-30) in the first two minutes of the second stanza. However, Philadelphia showed its resilience once again fighting back to take its only lead of the game (37-36) with 15:33 to go. Hostetter made a driving layup and Carly Strickland (3 points) made one of two foul shots to spark a 7-2 spurt from the hosts that opened up a 43-39 advantage.
Hostetter accounted for six of the seven points and also blocked a shot during that mini run.
The Golden Rams put five players in double figures, including Ortman’s 11 points off the bench. Serratelli finished with 12 and Lennon 11 in support of Hostetter and Stewart’s matching 14-spots. Not including Ortman’s 11, West Chester’s bench contributed just seven points on the night.
Former Downingtown East star Kristen Blye posted a game-high 19 points for Philadelphia University. That total was matched by Stephanie Agger, who added six assists.
West Chester returns to Hollinger Field House on Saturday, Dec. 4 when the the fourth-ranked Holy Family Tigers come calling for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
