Lennon’s 26 Points Lead WCU To Upset Over No. 8 Holy Family

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Alex Lennon scored a career-high 26 points and added a season-best four blocked shots to lead host West Chester to a 74-69 victory over eighth-ranked Holy Family in a non-league women's basketball contest inside Hollinger Field House Saturday afternoon.

West Chester (5-1) increased its win streak to four games with the upset over Holy Family (4-2). It marked the second straight win for the Golden Rams over a ranked opponent, dating back to last season’s PSAC Quarterfinal round victory at No. 23 Millersville.
 
Megan Stewart added 12 points and eight assists while Allison Hostetter added 13 points and nine rebounds.

Holy Family’s Samantha Thompson (19 points) drained a 3-pointer with 1:05 left in the contest to make it a one-possession game (72-69). However, Golden Rams’ senior co-captain Mary Kate Serratelli, with a balcony full of friends and family watching and younger sister, Maggie, sitting on Holy Family’s bench, nailed both of her foul shots with three seconds remaining to ice the upset win.

Serratelli finished with five points and three rebounds in the game. Her sister, a true freshman for the Tigers, did not play.

West Chester had led by as many as 13 with 3:18 to go in the game. That is when eighth-ranked Holy Family made its final attempt at a comeback, outscoring the hosts by a 14-4 margin over the the next 2:13 to pull within three with just over a minute to left.

Lennon was on fire all night long, going 11-for-15 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line. She grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists to go along with her career-high 26 points and four blocked shots.

Holy Family’s Erin Mann, a West Chester native, led the Tigers with 20 points and nine rebounds. Meghan Gibson added 11 and Catherine Carr 10.

West Chester is off until next weekend when the Golden Rams host their annual Carol Eckman Classic at Hollinger Field House Saturday, Dec. 11 and Sunday, Dec. 12. Bowie State, who is among others receiving votes in the latest Division II coaches’ poll, Lincoln and PSAC rival Millersville will participate in the tournament.
