WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Megan Stewart scored 10 points and registered six steals, but host West Chester’s poor shooting performance was too much to overcome in a 53-44 loss to visiting Millersville in a PSAC East women’s basketball showdown at Hollinger Field House Sunday afternoon.
West Chester (14-7, 4-4 PSAC East) made just three field goals in the first half and shot just 22.2 percent (12 of 54) for the game. Millersville (17-4, 7-1) strengthened its hold on first place in the division with the win.
Bridget Carlin’s jumper at the 9:20 mark of the first half was the Golden Rams’ first field goal of the game. However, West Chester trailed just 15-7 thanks to an excellent effort at the foul line (12 of 15 in the first half) coupled with a poor shooting effort from Millersville as well. The Marauders were only 11 of 33 from the field in the first 20 minutes, missing more than half of their free throws to boot.
Millersville led 22-8 with seven minutes remaining in the first half. It would later extend that lead to a game-high 18 points with 1:46 left before the break. Freshman Carly Strickland (4 points) nailed the Golden Rams’ second field goal at the 1:31 mark, and Janelle Garber (9 points) hit a jumper and a foul shot with 58 ticks left that closed the deficit to 13 – where it stood at the half.
A pair of free throws from Stewart with 6:36 left drew West Chester to within six (43-37). However, that was as close as the Rams would come to the Marauders. That capped a 15-7 run over eight minutes. Stewart scored all of her 10 points during that run and added three steals as well.
Millersville’s Jenna Craig scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to record a double-double for the Marauders. Raquel Green scored 11 points and grabbed nine boards as well.
West Chester is back in action on Wednesday at cross-town rival Cheyney at 6 p.m. at Cope Hall.
