WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Claire Grimwood, Shannon Hayes and Alyssa Gallen all posted hat tricks as No. 5 West Chester defeated visiting Indiana (Pa.), 18-7, in a PSAC crossover match at sunny, but cold, Vonnie Gros Field Saturday afternoon.
West Chester (6-0) forced 20 turnovers and limited IUP (3-5) to just 14 shots as the Golden Rams controlled the tempo of the game throughout. Eleven different players scored a goal and all 27 players got in the game.
The Golden Rams scored the first three goals of the game, before IUP tallied to stop the streak. However, West Chester scored five unanswered goals over the next four minutes to take control, 8-1. After the Crimson Hawks scored again, WCU rattled off four straight tallies to take a 12-2 advantage and chase IUP's starting goalkeeper Liana Wall, who made four saves.
Kaitlin Sterling took over for Wall, who entered the game as a position player, and made 11 saves the rest of the way.
Kelly Martin (3-0) started in the cage for West Chester and played the first half to pick up the win. MacKenzie O'Keefe played the second half and made three saves.
West Chester hosts Rollins College Sunday at 12 p.m. at Vonnie Gros Field. Sunday marks the third and final game of WCU's Lax 4 Life - a teenage suicide awareness fundraiser to benefit the Allyson Rose Green Foundation.
