WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Charlie Kelly lofted a fly ball down the right field line in foul territory with one out that Wilmington’s right fielder threw over the catcher’s head, allowing Nick Spisak to score the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning and lift West Chester to a 7-6 victory at Serpico Stadium Saturday.
With the win, West Chester (31-9) moves on to the championship game of the Bill Giles Classic, which will be played at Citizen’s Bank Park, home of the two-time defending National League champion Philadelphia Phillies, on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. The victory completes a home-and-home sweep for the Golden Rams over Wilmington as well.
Joe Wendle’s two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning tied the game at 6-6. Wendle finished 2-for-6 at the plate with three RBI. Kevin McGrath was 3-for-6 with a run scored and an RBI. Josh Heyne collected a pair of hits as well.
Fred Breidenbach (9-1) pitched 7.2 innings of relief to pick up his ninth win of the season. He scattered three hits, walked three and struck out six without allowing a run to score. Jordan Lehman started and lasted 4.1 innings. He yielded six runs on nine hits and struck out two.
West Chester has won the Bill Giles Classic six times, including the last two consecutively. This year’s event is the 10th annual showcase for Division II schools in the Philadelphia area. The Liberty Classic, Division I’s tournament, will take place at 7 p.m. after the Bill Giles Classic.
