WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Kara Shumock defeated Michelle DeStefano at fifth singles to clinch the victory for West Chester University as the Golden Rams went on to a 6-3 verdict over visiting Millersville Friday afternoon at South Campus Courts.
Shumock claimed a 6-2, 6-4 straight set win that was the fifth and decisive victory for West Chester (11-4, 2-1 PSAC East). Shumock dropped the opening game of the second set after winning the first set, but rallied for two straight wins to get back on top and never trailed again.
With the match knotted at 3-3, West Chester needed two of three wins at fourth, fifth and sixth singles to take the match. The Golden Rams responded with victories at all three. Claire Afrassiabian made it a 4-3 match with her 6-0, 6-1 win at fourth singles over Kaeley McCabe while Teresa Grasso rallied at sixth singles for a 2-6, 6-2, 10-8 tie-breaker victory over Shauna Powers.
Brittany Counts and Ali Fetter teamed up at first doubles for a win, and Allie Melham and Grasso teamed up at third doubles for another victory to give the oriE923UPolden Rmas a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
Luisi Souto was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at No. 2 singles over Andrea Konas for West Chester’s other victory.
