No. 13 West Chester Sweeps Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.
– Joe Wendle and Kyle Orensky each picked up a pair of runs batted in during a 4-2 victoyr in the opener, while Wendle and Charlie Kelly went deep in a 13-6 victory in the nightcap of a PSAC baseball doubleheader at Fairchild Field on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon.

West Chester (34-6, 16-6 PSAC East) kept pace with Kutztown in the race for first place in the Eastern Division of the PSAC. The Bears swept Millersville in a doubleheader in Kutztown. Shippensburg (12-35, 6-16) will play its final two games of the year Saturday at Serpico Stadium when the Rams and the Raiders get together once again.

Wendle recorded a RBI groundout in the first inning, and Orensky followed with a sacrifice fly to left that Shippensburg’s left fielder actually dropped that put West Chester on top early, 2-0.

Wendle and Orensky each singled in a run in the top of the third that put the Golden Rams in front, 4-0. From there, sophomore right-hander Jordan Lehman (5-0) took it from there. He tossed a complete-game, two-hitter. Lehman allowed both runs, only one earned, walked two and struck out three.

Five Golden Rams recorded one hit each.

Nate Umberger (1-9) threw a complete game for Shippensburg. He allowed two earned runs on five hits, walked two and struck out five.

Fred Briedenbach (10-1) tied the school record for wins in a single season in the second game. He started and lasted six innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out seven. Carmen Daddario pitched the seventh.

Wendle was 2-for-5 in the nightcap with five RBI. Kelly was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

Trailing 5-3 entering the fourth, West Chester scored three in the fourth and five in the fifth to take control of the game. Five of the first six batters in the fourth inning all singled. Nick Spisak singled in a run during that stretch, while Wendle knocked in two with a base hit.

Matt Baer hit a RBI double in the fifth, Spisak hit a sacrifice fly and Wendle knocked in a run with a ground out. Kelly’s two-run shot in the sixth closed out West Chester’s scoring, giving the Rams a 13-5 advantage.

West Chester and Shippensburg will finish up the regular-season with a doubleheader at Serpico Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Tomorrow will be Senior Day for West Chester’s graduating seniors.
