WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Kevin McGrath was a combined 4-for-6 with five runs scored and three RBI as 10th-ranked West Chester swept a PSAC East doubleheader from visiting Mansfield on a sunny and pleasant Saturday afternoon at Serpico Stadium.
West Chester (26-5, 12-2 PSAC East) outscored Mansfield 57-19 in taking three out of four from Mansfield (15-11, 5-7) in the four-game weekend set.
Sophomore righty Jordan Lehman (3-0) pitched a complete game in the opener, allowing three runs on six hits while walking two and striking out six as he hurled West Chester to a 12-3 win. Junior right-hander Dave Stieg (3-1) picked up the win in the nightcap, lasting five innings and yielding three earned runs on seven hits as the Golden Rams prevailed, 11-5.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning, West Chester victimized Mansfield pitching for three runs in the third, four in the fourth and four more in the fifth. McGrath and Orensky each hit solo home runs in the third, and Joe Wendle had a RBI groundout.
Nick Spisak singled in two runs in the fourth and two more runners crossed on an error by Mansfield’s left fielder. The Golden Rams loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth and that’s when Mansfield head coach Harry Hillson yanked starter Bryan Wilde (3-2) in favor of Marc Baker. Brandon Wolfe greeted Baker with a RBI groundout, Josh Heyne hit a sacrifice fly and then McGrath and Spisak both walked to load the bases once again. Wendle then singled up the middle, chasing home McGrath and Bob Stumpo.
Christian Cox hit a pinch hit double in the bottom of the sixth after the Mountaineers put up a single tally in the top half of the frame. Mansfield would score again in the seventh, but it was not enough.
Wilde surrendered 10 of the Rams’ 12 runs, however, only six were earned. He lasted four innings and walked six while striking out one. Marc Baker finished up, allowing two runs on three hits, walking three and striking out two.
In the nightcap, West Chester plated two in the bottom of the first, answering a three-spot from Mansfield in its first at bats, then continued its onslaught with five runs in the second, one in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 10-3 lead.
McGrath and Wendle had RBI singles in the five-run second, and Orensky hit a two-run single for support.
