WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Millersville plated four unearned runs in the top of the eighth inning to knock off No. 6 West Chester, 9-5, in game one of a PSAC East baseball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. However, Fred Breidenbach picked up his eighth win of the season on the mound in the nightcap to earn the split, 6-5, at sunny and hot Serpico Stadium.
West Chester (27-6, 13-3 PSAC East) captures the season series with Millersville (15-16, 9-7) three games to one as a result of Tuesday’s split.
Breidenbach (8-0) threw 6.2 innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits, walking three and striking out two to remain perfect on the year. He surrendered three runs in the third inning when the Marauders took a short-lived 3-2 lead. However, the freshman righty settled down, retiring the next seven batters, before Jeff Heisey led off the seventh with a home run.
Millersville scored another run in the seventh when Miles Gallagher doubled in a run with two outs. That is when Jordan Lehman entered the game and got the final out for Breidenbach and preserve the win.
Ryan Stauffer (4-2) went the distance for Millersville and suffered the loss. He allowed six runs, five of them earned, on 12 hits, walked one and struck out two.
Matt Baer finished 3-for-3 with two RBI in the nightcap.
Millersville scored four unearned runs with the help of two West Chester errors in the top of the eighth inning of game one to steal the win. Carmen Daddario (4-2) suffered the loss in relief. He pitched 1.2 innings, walked one and struck out four, giving up four hits.
The game went into the top of the seventh tied at 3-3. Millersville plated two runs on a double from Derek Kline and a single from Gallagher.
West Chester answered back in the bottom half of the frame to force extra innings when Baer greeted reliever Zach Eckley with a solo shot over the right-center field fence. Pinch hitter, Christian Cox, then singled home the tying run with two outs, but was thrown out trying to stretch the single into a double.
Kevin McGrath homered in the sixth the tie the game at 3-apiece. Kyle Orensky had given the Golden Rams a 2-0 lead with a two-run blast in the first.
West Chester is back at Serpico Stadium on Friday for a doubleheader with Kutztown.
