KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Alyssa Gallen came off the bench in the second half and scored four goals to lift visiting West Chester to a 22-9 victory over homestanding Kutztown in a PSAC East women’s lacrosse match on a hot Tuesday afternoon at Keystone Field.
West Chester (10-0, 6-0 PSAC East) outscored Kutztown (2-8, 0-6) by a 14-2 margin after halftime to eventually pull away from the upset-minded Bears, who trailed just 8-7 at the break.
Gallen’s first tally 8:32 into the half, sent the Golden Rams on an 11-goal run to close the game. Julia Walsh registered three goals in the final 11 minutes of the game to cap the rally.
Kutztown held a 4-2 advantage eight minutes into the contest, scoring on its first four shots of the tilt. West Chester head coach Ginny Martino pulled starting goalkeeper Mackenzie O’Keefe and inserted Kelly Martin (4-0), who made seven saves the rest of the way and allowed five goals.
Freshman Nicole Pyle ignited a small five-goal spurt after the goalie change that put West Chester in front for good, 7-4. Kutztown scored a pair of goals to draw within one. But, Gabrielle Stitz scored the second of her three tallies to push the lead back to two.
The Bears’ Amanda Bushong scored with six ticks left in the first half to make it a one-goal game at the break.
Three straight goals in the first six minutes of the second half gave West Chester some breathing room. Nicole Haines (3G, 4A) posted a pair of goals while Pyle recorded the third of her four on the afternoon.
Pyle finished with six points (3G, 3A). Claire Grimwood scored a goal and picked up two assists as did Shannon Hayes.
West Chester returns home on Thursday to play a non-conference game with Dowling at Vonnie Gros Field.
