No. 5 West Chester To Host NCAA First Round Lacrosse Match

2010 NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse Bracket

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – West Chester University’s fifth-ranked Golden Rams were chosen for the NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse Tournament late Sunday evening. The second-seed out of the South Region, West Chester will host third-seeded and fourth-ranked Limestone at Vonnie Gros Field at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 15.

No. 2 Adelphi (14-1), the second seed in the North Region and defending national champion, will take on No. 7 Stonehill (12-2) in the other first-round contest on May 15. That game will be played at Competition Field in Garden City, N.Y. Adelphi defeated Stonehill in overtime, 14-13, to capture the Northeast-10 conference title.

The 2010 NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse Championships will be held in conjunction with the Division III national semifinals on May 22-23 at Clark Field in Gettysburg, Pa. No. 3 Lock Haven (16-1) and No. 1 C.W. Post (15-1), both top seeds in the South and North regions, respectively, earned a bye into the national semifinals. Lock Haven will play the West Chester-Limestone winner while C.W. Post gets the Adelphi-Stonehill victor.

West Chester (17-1) is making its eighth appearance in the NCAA Division II tournament since the tournament’s inception in 2001. The Golden Rams are 9-5 overall in their previous seven years, winning the national championship in both 2002 and 2008. West Chester was runner-up five times (2001, 2004-07). This marks the first time the Golden Rams have played in the first-round game. The NCAA field expanded to six teams one year ago. West Chester has missed the NCAA Tournament just twice (2003, 2009).

Limestone (18-1) makes its fifth appearance in the national tournament and third consecutive. The Saints fell to West Chester in the 2008 national semifinals. The Rams’ victory in that game avenged a season-opening loss to Limestone – West Chester’s only loss of the year en route to the national title.

West Chester is 5-1 all-time against Limestone with the lone loss in 2008 serving as the only win for the Saints in the series.  The Golden Rams defeated the Saints, 17-9, in the 2008 national semifinal in the team’s last meeting.
