COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Megan Lamm’s penalty kick in the final seconds lifted visiting West Chester University to a 24-22 road victory over Maryland in its women’s rugby opener Saturday afternoon.
Maryland scored the first try, but West Chester struck back six minutes later with a try from Priscilla Torres, tying the match, 5-5. Lamm added three more points with a penalty kick, giving the Golden Rams a three-point lead, 8-5. Maryland scored once more and made the conversion, before the half was over to take a 12-8 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Terps added to their lead, leaving West Chester trailing, 17-8. Two minutes later, Alex DiCicco scored a try for West Cheste,r and Lamm made the conversion to pull within one, 17-16.
Not long after Maryland answered with another try, giving them a five-point lead, Brianne Feinour scored in the last nine minutes of the game. Trailing by one, West Chester was given one last chance to capture the win with a penalty kick. Lamm converted the kick, giving them a win in the final seconds.
It was a great way to kick off the season for the women’s rugby team.
The women’s rugby team will host East Carolina Sunday morning in its home opener on the rugby pitch at 11 a.m.
