Women’s Rugby Suffers Tough Loss Against East Carolina, 21-10

Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa.
– West Chester University suffered a 21-10 setback to East Carolina in its home opener on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. It was a well played game on both sides. But, East Carolina proved to be too much in the end.

West Chester (1-1), playing its second game in as many days, held the lead for much of the first half until the Pirates (2-0) were finally able to gain some momentum toward the break.

West Chester’s Cheryl Johnson scored the Golden Rams’ first try of the afternoon. East Carolina quickly struck back with a try and a conversion of its own to take an early 7-5 advantage.

After some battling back-and-forth down the field, Mary Kate Heaton went in for a try, putting West Chester back on top, 10-7. The Pirates later capitalized on their  center finishing off a breakaway and running it in for a try that made the score 14-10 at the half after ECU’s conversion.

The Golden Rams fought hard in the second half to get back into East Carolina’s half of the field. Midway through the second half, the Pirates scored the only try in the final stanza and made the conversion to give them the 21-10 lead.

West Chester put up a good fight in the last twenty minutes of the game. But, it was not enough to keep possession to score.

The women’s rugby team will be back in action next Saturday at LaSalle for a 5 p.m. game.
