WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Senior Megan Stewart posted a game-high 22 points, and Allison Hostetter ripped off her sixth double-double of the year (13 points, 14 rebounds) to lead host West Chester University to a 75-67 victory over visiting Kutztown University Wednesday evening inside Hollinger Field House.
West Chester (12-3, 3-0 PSAC East) took over sole possession of first place in the Eastern Division standings as a result of Shippensburg’s win over Bloomsburg Wednesday. Kutztown (8-7, 1-2) saw its personal four-game win streak over the Golden Rams come to a halt with the setback.
The Rams increased their winning streak on the season to four while taking the upper hand in the division race early on. Sophomore Alex Lennon scored 10 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked five shots.
West Chester outscored Kutztown 50-29 in the second half after falling behind 38-25 in the first half. The Golden Rams shot 43.6 percent in the final 20 minutes, including 5 of 11 from beyond the 3-point arc. For the game, West Chester hit 47.1 percent of its 3-pointers (8-for-17).
Kutztown was able to build its 13-point advantage in the first half due in large part to Ashley Wood’s 17 points before the break. However, West Chester held the Bears’ guard to three points in the second half.
KU’s all-conference star Melissa McQuade was held scoreless in the first half and finished with eight points on the night. She did, however, set Kutztown’s school record for career rebounds early in the first half. She now has 849 career boards.
Stewart sparked West Chester’s second-half comeback with 12 points and six assists in the final 20 minutes of play. The Golden Rams limited the Bears’ chances from the free throw line in the second frame, sending their guests to the charity stripe just six times. KU’s Steph Zewe posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 caroms.
Ambreeline Ortman notched five points and grabbed five rebounds off the bench for the Golden Rams. She accounted for half of the point production out of the Rams’ bench Wednesday night.
West Chester travels to arch-rival Millersville on Saturday afternoon for a critical Eastern Division showdown with the Marauders at Pucillo Gym. Tip is set for 1 p.m.
