BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Shawn Leo kicked three field goals, and Tim Keyser posted a career-best 160 yards receiving, but C.W. Post QB Steven Laurino threw four touchdown passes to lead the Pioneers to a 34-23 win over West Chester in a PSAC contest Saturday afternoon at Hickox Field.
Keyser snared a 75-yard TD reception on the first play from scrimmage in the game. However, the Pioneers (2-3, 2-0 PSAC East) scored 20 points in the third quarter and shutout the Golden Rams (2-3, 1-1) in the fourth to maintain its 11-point cushion after 45 minutes of play.
West Chester’s achilles’ heel all season long has been its inability to finish off drives with touchdowns. Despite racking up 435 yards of total offense, including 328 through the air, that seemed to be the problem once again. Leo booted three field goals of 39, 47 and 48 yards to set the school record for field goals made in a single season at 13. The old record of 12 had stood since 1984, but was broken by Leo in just five games. Leo is now 13 of 15 on the year in field goals made. His 48-yard tied his career long set last season against Shippensburg.
Eric Brundidge caught an 81-yard TD pass from Matt Carroll in the third quarter for West Chester’s only other touchdown. The Golden Rams could not put the ball in the end zone on any type of sustained drive Saturday afternoon at Hickox Field. Brundidge’s catch came on the third play of that drive. Brundidge’s TD reception did put West Chester on top temporarily, 23-20.
However, C.W. Post answered right back with a 9-play, 91-yard drive capped by Jeff Mack’s 15-yard run with 3:25 to go in the third quarter that pushed the Pioneers into the lead for good. Sean McCartney threw an interception on the first play of West Chester’s ensuing drive, and C.W. Post marched half the field in three plays for an insurance touchdown to make it a 34-23 ballgame.
Playing without starting RB Jackson Fagan, West Chester mustered just 107 yards rushing on the ground, mainly because fellow RB Rondell White was injured early in the game and did not return. Keyser led all Rams rushers with 40 yards on two carries. He finished the day with 200 all-purpose yards
McCartney went 6 of 11 for 132 yards, but threw three interceptions. Matt Carroll was 9-for-19 for 196 yards without any picks. Each of the QB’s threw a touchdown pass. C.W. Post recorded nine sacks in the game, harassing the two signal-callers all afternoon.
Defensively, West Chester’s Eric Edwers recorded 12 tackles and was credited with a pass breakup. Mike Pereira and Ronell Williams each registered a sack as well. Williams finished with a career-best six tackles, including five solo efforts. Mike Labor had six tackles as well, including two for a loss.
West Chester continues its three-game road swing next Saturday at Shippensburg at 1 p.m.
