WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Anna McGlade scored a try and registered a pair of conversions while MaryKay Heaton posted a pair of trys as host West Chester defeated visiting Quinnipiac, 29-3, in a women's rugby contest between two NCAA varsity programs on the rugby pitch on the campus of West Chester University Saturday morning.
West Chester (5-1) pulled away in the second half on a pair of trys by Heaton 13 minutes apart that increased a 12-3 lead at halftime to 22-3. McGlade added an insurance tally in the 72nd minute for the final measure and then converted the try for two more points.
Beth DiMassa opened the scoring in the first half for West Chester when she went in for a score in the 10th minute to make it, 5-0. Quinnipiac's Krystin Orrico converted a penalty kick in the 22nd minute to pull the Bobcats within two. However, Lauren Wertz scored just before halftime to make the score 12-3 at the break.
The game marked the fifth time that West Chester has played another intercollegiate varsity program. West Chester is 4-1 all-time against NCAA competition with wins over Eastern Illinois, Norwich and Quinnipiac. The Golden Rams lone loss to an NCAA team came at the hands of Eastern Illinois in a rematch. Quinnipiac is in its first year as a varsity program. They became the sixth NCAA program in the country this past spring when it announced that it would elevate the program to varsity status.
With the win, West Chester concludes its fall schedule and will return to action in the spring as they prepare for the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union playoffs and a spot in the USA Rugby Tournament next April.
