Women's Basketball Drives Past Slippery Rock, 79-68

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Allison Hostetter led four players in double figures with a team-high 19 points while Alex Lennon scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead West Chester to a 79-68 PSAC women’s basketball victory over Slippery Rock Saturday afternoon inside Hollinger Field House.
 
West Chester (2-0, 1-0) shot 45.1 percent (32 of 71) from the field and harassed Slippery Rock (1-2, 0-1) into 26 turnovers while keeping The Rock under 40 percent shooting for the game. That defensive effort limited the visitors to just 32 points after halftime. The Golden Rams’ shooting percentage was bolstered by 42 points in the paint for the game and 14 points on the fast break.
 
The Golden Rams went on an 11-2 run over the final 4:36 of the first half to break a 34-all tie and take a nine-point lead in to the locker room at intermission. Hostetter scored four of the 11 points during the spurt and had 13 of her team-best 19 points by the break.  
 
After West Chester opened up a double-digit lead three minutes into the second half (51-41), Slippery Rock would not get any closer than five points the rest of the way.
 
The Rams’ bench accounted for 28 points Saturday – a stark contrast to Tuesday’s opener on the road at Philadelphia University. Sophomore Paige Elliott led the way with 12 points and five rebounds while senior Shamyra Hammond had seven points, and freshman Kendall Benovy contributed six points, six rebounds and one blocked shot.
 
Ambreelinne Ortman scored 11 points as well for West Chester.
 
Slippery Rock was led by Danielle Smith’s double-double. She posted a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds in the loss. Jasmine Cooper scored 16 and grabbed nine boards while Erinne Cunningham and Sherita Stanley each chipped in 12. The Rock played just seven players in the contest.
 
West Chester is home Sunday in the second game of this weekend’s PSAC crossover with the Western Division. The Golden Rams host Mercyhurst at 1 p.m. The Lakers fell at Millersville, 62-48, on Saturday.
