WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Alex Lennon scored 12 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked four shots to lead West Chester to a 67-57 victory over visiting Mercyhurst in a PSAC women’s basketball crossover tilt inside Hollinger Field House Sunday afternoon.
West Chester (3-0, 2-0 PSAC) harassed Mercyhurst (0-4, 0-2) into 37 turnovers and limited the visitors to just 33.3 percent shooting from the field (9 of 27) in the second half to hold off a determined Lakers squad.
Ambreelinne Ortman led the Golden Rams in scoring with 14 points. She added five rebounds and three steals to her numbers in the box score as well. Her performance was particularly important with all-leaguer Allison Hostetter (5 points, 5 turnovers) struggling all afternoon.
Meghan Kerrigan chipped in eight points, four assists and four steals while Jillian Keefer posted seven points and dished out four assists as well. Two of Keefer’s helpers came on consecutive trips down the floor when she found Ortman alone in the corner for a baseline 3-pointer each time that extended a one-point lead to seven with 1:22 left in the first half.
Mercyhurst cut the deficit to four (35-31) by halftime and would eventual tie the game at 37-apiece. However, West Chester went on a 15-6 run over the next eight minutes to take a 52-43 lead with 9:47 remaining and never looked back.
Mercyhurst’s Lindsay Stamp had 18 points off the bench for the Lakers, and Kaylee Foster put up 14, but it was not enough to overcome the turnovers and sub-par shooting performance.
The Golden Rams are off until the Tuesday after Thanksgiving when they travel to nationally ranked Holy Family at 6 p.m. for a non-league tilt.
