PHILADELPHIA, Pa. –Lance McDowell's double-double, capped by a pair of free throws in the final seconds, helped visiting West Chester hang on for a 67-64 victory over host Holy Family in a non-league men's basketball contest Tuesday evening.
West Chester (4-2) saw an 11-point lead with under five minutes remaining dwindle to just one against Holy Family (3-2). However, McDowell grabbed his 10th rebound of the night with four seconds left, and the Golden Rams clinging to a 65-64 advantage, and then sank both free throws, to ice the contest.
"No question that this was a big win for us," WCU head coach Damien Blair said. "There was a point late where we could have pushed the lead to 12 or 14 points, and instead we let (Holy Family) come back. But, the kids were willing to put their mistakes behind them and do whatever it took to win the game.
"Everybody out there believed we were going to win the game."
McDowell finished the night with 19 points, which included a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line, to go along with his 10 boards as the senior forward recorded his first double-double of the season. Jon Breeden contributed 10 points and four assists for the Golden Rams while Tim Flecken added eight.
West Chester returns home this weekend for a pair of PSAC crossover contests against Clarion and Gannon on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
