WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Alexandra Lennon and Allison Hostetter scored 14 points and 13 points, respectively, to lead host West Chester to a 73-42 victory over University of Sciences in the final of the 26th Annual Carol Eckman Memorial Classic inside Hollinger Field House Saturday afternoon.
West Chester (8-2) outscored Sciences (6-5) by a 41-24 in the second half, scorching the nets with a 51.5 percent showing from the floor. The Golden Rams shot an impressive 42.5 percent for the game.
The Sciences made a brief run at the Rams in the second half, pulling within eight (38-30) by virtue of a 9-0 spurt, with 14 minutes left in the contest. However, West Chester answered with a 19-3 explosion over the next eight minutes to open up a 57-33 advantage.
Lennon came one rebound shy of her second double-double in as many days, finishing with nine boards. She also contributed three blocked shots and three steals. Hostetter added eight caroms off the glass to her totals. Lennon scored 27 points and grabbed 19 rebounds in the two games during the Classic.
Ambreelinne Ortman and Shamyra Hammond each contributed nine points in the rout. Meghan Kerrigan dished out eight assists against just one turnover in a very fine effort.
Head coach Deirdre Kane picked up her 400th career win at the school with the victory. She is already the all-time winningest coach in school history and now holds a record of 400-283 at WCU and 442-317 overall. Ironically, Mary Fleig, Millersville's head coach, also picked up her 400th career win at Millersville on Saturday.
Brianne Traub scored a game-high 25 points. She had 25 of the team’s 42 points, including 13 of the Devils’ 18 in the first half. Carolyn Edwards was the Sciences’ next high scorer with just five.
West Chester travels to Indiana (Pa.) on Friday and then moves on to California (Pa.) on Saturday.
NOTES: The Carol Eckman Memorial Classic is named in honor of former West Chester University women’s basketball coach, who passed away to cancer in 1986 … the Golden Rams are now 34-18 all-time in the tournament … they own an 11-game winning streak in the tournament … West Chester defeated Molloy 75-54 in the first round … the Golden Rams downed University of the Sciences 73-42 … the Rams won each game by a combined 52 points … Millersville defeated Molloy, 59-55, in the other game Saturday … Millersville head coach Mary Fleig picked up her 400th career win at the school with that victory … Fleig and WCU head coach Deirdre Kane each picked up their 400th win at their respective schools on the same day ...
