WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Alex Lennon scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Allison Hostetter scored 13 points and grabbed a dozen rebounds to lead host West Chester to a 74-68 overtime victory over No. 21 Millersville in a PSAC East women’s basketball showdown inside Hollinger Field House Saturday afternoon.
West Chester (19-5, 10-2 PSAC East) took over sole possession of second place in the conference standings with the win. Millersville (19-5, 9-3) falls into third place with the loss. The win gives the Golden Rams the upper hand in a fight for home court advantage in the first round of the PSAC Tournament in two weeks.
West Chester earns a split in the season series with the Marauders while picking up its third win over a nationally ranked opponent this winter.
Hostetter’s last-second shot attempt was blocked by Millersville’s Gabrielle Styles at the end of regulation to send the contest into overtime tied at 66-all. It marked the second time in the last three meetings between these schools that the game went into extra time.
Mashira Newman drained a pair of foul shots, following a pair of turnovers, to put the Marauders up by two. However, it would be the last two points of the game for Millersville, who was shut out the final four minutes of OT, going 0-for-6 from the field in the extra session.
Lennon blocked a pair of shots on Millersville’s next possession and then converted a layup underneath on the other end to knot the game at 68-68. Her layup with 1:38 remaining put the hosts up for good, 70-68.
Hostetter hit a jumper with :52 remaining, and Mary Kate Serratelli iced the contest with two free throws to close out the scoring. Serratelli finished with 13 points as the Golden Rams put five players in double figures.
Megan Stewart put up 10 points as did Ambreelinne Ortman off the bench.
Aurielle Mosley led Millersville with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Sophia Waters kept the visitors in the contest by going 4-for-8 from beyond the 3-point arc and finished with 20 points. Mosley blocked four shots in the loss as opposed to Lennon’s three send-backs. Both Mosley and Lennon led the PSAC in blocked shots with 72 entering the contest.
West Chester turned the ball over 32 times while Millersville committed 29 turnovers. The Golden Rams improved to 11-1 at home and evened up their record in overtime this year at 1-1. Ironically, West Chester’s lone home loss came in overtime to Edinboro in early January.
Bloomsburg defeated Cheyney on Saturday to remain in first place by one game. The Huskies visit Hollinger Field House one week from today in the regular-season finale.
West Chester will travel to Cheyney on Wednesday evening for a 6 p.m. contest against the Wolves.
