WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Host West Chester pulled out a pair of very tight doubles matches at one and three, and then rode that momentum into the singles portion of its PSAC East matchup, to earn a 6-3 victory over visiting Millersville on an unseasonably warm and balmy Monday afternoon at South Campus Courts.
West Chester (12-8, 4-1 PSAC East) sewed up a spot in the postseason conference tournament while also assuring itself of a home match in the quarterfinals as a result of its win over Millersville (5-8, 2-3).
The Golden Rams will be making their second straight appearance in the conference tournament while earning the school’s first home tilt in the process.
Brittany Counts and Luisi Souto outdueled their counterparts at first doubles, 9-7, while Kara Shumock and Nicole Paller were 9-7 winners at third doubles as well. Those two decisions swung the pendulum of momentum in West Chester’s favor.
Counts took that good fortune in doubles and turned it into a 6-3, 6-4 win over Melissa Plowman at first singles. Souto was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Samantha Prager at second singles. With wins over the Marauders’ top two singles players, West Chester needed just one win from its remaining four to lock up a postseason home bid.
Senior Claire Afrassiabian was an easy 6-0, 6-1 winner at fourth singles to notch the win. Alex Santoro was a 7-5, 6-0 winner at fifth singles as well.
West Chester will take on winless Cheyney Tuesday at home at 2 p.m. in its PSAC finale. A win in that match would leave the Golden Rams with its best regular season league finish in years.
