Women's Rugby Falls In First Round Of MARFU, 15-12

Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md.
- West Chester University dropped a 15-12 decision on the road at Maryland in the first round of the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union playoffs Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, West Chester (6-4) is eliminated from the playoffs and will not be eligible for the USA Rugby national tournament at the end of the season.

"Maryland played great defense today," Golden Rams head coach Tony DeRemer said.  "We usually feature a very productive offense, but Maryland came out with a game plan to stop us, and they did. Their offense also controlled the tempo of the game and starved our team of any offensive time with the ball.

"We also committed too many turnovers and unforced errors which cost us the match."

Maryland jumped out to a 15-0 lead by halftime.

West Chester fought back with a pair of trys from Anna McGlade and Maddie Kriebel, but it was not enough.

West Chester University will play host to the MARFU Championships next weekend. Penn State will play Navy and Virginia will play Maryland on Saturday in the semifinals. Sunday will feature the championship match at 12 p.m. right after the consolation game at 10 a.m.
